Short Summary
Lead technical consultancy support for the development of a strategic communication toolkit aimed at helping Marine Protected Area (MPA) managers communicate and advocate for fully protected areas across the Mediterranean region.
The project focused on strengthening stakeholder engagement and governance processes by providing practical communication tools and guidance supporting the creation and expansion of fully protected Marine Protected Areas.
Key Contributions
- Lead technical consultant on Marine Protected Area governance, stakeholder engagement and full protection concepts within the project.
- Co-development of a customisable communication toolkit designed for Mediterranean MPA managers working on full/high protection initiatives.
- Translation of complex ecological, governance and socio-economic concepts into accessible communication materials for stakeholders and decision-makers.
- Development of guidance materials supporting participatory communication approaches and stakeholder engagement processes related to highly protected Marine Protected Areas.
- Collaboration with communication specialist Paul Seassal to combine governance expertise and strategic communication approaches into a practical and adaptable toolkit.
- Contribution to regional governance and management discussions through participation and facilitation within MedPAN workshops and events.
Results & Impact
- Development of a communication toolkit publicly available through the MedPAN Resource Centre in English and French.
- Support for Marine Protected Area managers communicating highly protected area projects to local stakeholders and national authorities.
- Contribution to Mediterranean efforts promoting stronger protection levels and participatory governance approaches within MPAs.
- Increased accessibility of governance communication tools for marine conservation practitioners across the Mediterranean region.
- Participation as facilitator representing Oceanogami during the MedPAN Regional Workshop on Marine Protected Areas Management Effectiveness held in Montenegro in 2022.
